Axel Seifert

Enforcer of Innovation

Axel dedicated his entire career to composite design and processing. For the past 3 decades, he was involved in projects covering the entire scope of the composites industry: sporting goods, chemical industry, gas storage, aerospace and much more. As renown expert in filament winding, he developed the world-wide leading simulation software, helping customers to improve the efficiency of design and increasing productivity of their processes.
During the past 4 years, he served the automotive industry with a focus on composite pressure vessels for on-board storage of hydrogen.

Process

Filament winding combines accurate fiber lay-up with a high degree of automation. The tensioned fibers are impregnated in-line prior of being wound on a rotating mandrel. Using the materials in their basic forms allows to produce composites efficiently at low-cost. In recent years, the use of pre-impregnated fibers (thermoset or thermoplastic) have been introduced to enhance quality control and increase productivity

Simulation

Numerical simulation is the key to successful design and efficient production of filament wound parts. Software tools allow to model the entire lamination sequence and prepare the numerical data for FEA in order to verify different load conditions.

Once optimized, the code to control the filament winding machines is calculated resulting in a smooth and precise motion. Interfaces for all machines have been developed in cooperation with all major equipment suppliers.

Equipment

Today, multi-axis computer controlled machines are used to guide the fibers at precise angles around the mandrel. Besides the traditional lathe type designs, robotic systems find their ways to the production floor. To produce high quality parts, the fiber tensioning and impregnation devices are of vital importance.

Our new Headquarter

Since April 1st, 2023, SHARP Composites has moved to a new facility. With luminous offices and 500 m2 of workshop, there is plenty of space to work on bright ideas creating innovative composites. With excellent high-way connections, the location in Herk-de-Stad, Belgium, is easy to reach from the neighbouring countries, ... just 40 min from Brussels international airport.
